Dana has introduced the new Spicer Electrified e-Powershift transmission, a modular and flexible two-speed solution that provides a power take-off (PTO) function for electrified heavy mining machines.
Delivering high efficiency and superior performance in a compact package that makes the transition to electrification easy for the mining industry, the twin-engine version of the e-Powershift transmission delivers up to 322 hp (240 kW) of continuous power output, while the single-engine configuration is rated at 161 hp (120 kW) of continuous output.
Its flexible and powerful design makes it suitable for a wide range of applications, including small and medium-sized loaders and dump trucks used in underground mining, as well as construction wheel loaders, large lift trucks and terminal tractors. The highly efficient twin-engine configuration shown at MINExpo provides optimum traction in every working cycle without torque interruption.
The Spicer Electrified e-Powershift transmission will be available for prototype testing by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) by the end of this year.
“For more than half a century, Dana has been a trusted supplier of top-tier drive systems that deliver superior performance for mining equipment,” said Jeroen Declear, senior vice president of off-road drive and motion systems at Dana Incorporated. “The new e-Powershift transmission demonstrates how we are leveraging our extensive portfolio of electrification technologies to provide mining OEMs with comprehensive solutions that can help accelerate their transition to e-mobility.”
The launch of the Spicer Electrified e-Powershift demonstrates how Dana is rapidly and efficiently developing ready-to-use solutions that can help optimise and accelerate the mining industry’s transition to electrification.
It features Dana TM4 high-voltage motors from 350 to 800 volts to increase efficiency, reduce overall enclosure size and provide redundancy as required. The motors have proven their efficiency and reliability over hundreds of thousands of hours of operation in underground mining and other harsh environments.
The e-Powershift gearbox delivers highly efficient shifting thanks to its patented wet clutch and synchroniser, and can be configured with all-wheel drive and MOM off, eliminating the need for an additional motor and inverter.
The system provides an efficient turnkey solution with simplified drivetrain integration by using a single APC gearbox control unit. It uses proprietary software designed to optimise machine performance with multiple drive and PTO modes, including hill-hold mode and functional safety readiness.
The e-Powershift gearbox will be shown as part of a complete system that includes Spicer heavy-duty axles, designed to withstand the toughest mining conditions and provide superior braking power for reliability under full load conditions in all working classes. The system also includes Spicer driveshafts designed for longer life, minimal maintenance and lower operating costs.
